I had their "Reserve Cioppino" (no shells, plus Dungeness crab, $39) and it was, without a doubt, the best cioppino I've ever had in my life. I grew up Sicilian and my grandmother made the best. That is, up until last Friday night. Ciopinot did cioppino one notch better. Maybe -- forgive me nonna -- two notches better. My wife watched as my eyes glazed over and I could do nothing but slurp, drool and sigh. Thank you Mr. Cohen (a Sicilian name?).
"Sunchokes" (Jerusalem artichokes, sunroots) now at Von's. Versatile root vegetable with a "starchy-cripsiness", something between a potato and a jicama. Loaded with oligosaccharides, those semi-complex carbohydrates that feel good in your mouth, satisfy your tummy and feed the good flora of your intestines. A good source of inulin. Edible raw but great stir-fried and sauteed. Ask me for my "Sauteed Sunchoke and Mushroom" recipe.
